Been eyeing up cat wheels for a little while now, and when we got our new boy (Siberian) in October last year he made it obvious that we needed one. Our cats are house cats. They have an intricate run they can access through a window, but he needed more.
Came across Vevor in my searches, and they had the best price for the design I was after.
The wheel arrived quick enough, and the box was in perfect condition (be surprised how often that isn't the case these days).
Then came the next hour and a bit. There are a lot of pieces, HOWEVER, it is NOT difficult to put together. The instructions are a more than clear enough (if you can do IKEA, you can do this!) and literally everything you need is provided (even IKEA don't include the screwdrivers). You even get a pair of gloves and sand paper to smooth any rough edges left other from the manufacturing process (that to me is a great attention to care).
I did use my power driver on a low torque setting, but with patience, it could all be down my screwdriver.
You build the base first, simple enough, and then set to the wheel. I ordered the 52" (when fully grown the Siberian will exceeded 8kg). You will need some space to put the wheel together. We used our study, others may need to move the sofa out the way.
Once built, it is a lovely product of very high quality (I wish I could get this level of quality plywood for my DIY projects), with a protective finish.
The velcro tape is easy to install as well. I sat the wheel on its base and rotated it slowly as I applied the velcro.
Carpet was just as easy, but, as with the velcro, take your time. Don't be tempted to pull either too tight as you apply, but keep it firm.
The fish shaped brake is a cute finish and works well. I'm tempted to look into a quick release thing like you can get for bike wheels.
A note to those heading down the build, to save playing "where's the wheel slat with the hole for the brake" every single time you need to secure it, I'd suggest starting the carpet AT that slat that's used for the brake. This way when looking to secure the wheel you only need to look for the carpet seam (at some point I'll take off the carpet and reapply).
It's been up and 'running' for a few weeks now, and 2 out of the 3 cats love it. The 3rd doesn't hate it, she's just too lazy to use it.
It's not silent, but it isn't a jack hammer. It lives in my partners office, and whilst distracting if the cats are using it during a call, with her headset on its possible to ignore it.
It's a very safe design, as the bearings are hidden. The gap between the wheel and the base is also minimal. Whilst not impossible, I do feel it's unlikely any injury from normal use would be sustained.
Hadn't heard of the site before, so of course I was a bit skeptical (thank you Revolute disposable cards), but I had nothing to actually be worried about, and now I happily browse Vevor looking for the next great deal.
